A lot of people seem to set goals during for New Years’ Resolutions, but the truth is that it can – and should – be done any time you want to accomplish anything.
Set GREAT Goals!
Always make sure your goals are…
Granular – Get down to the nitty gritty on what your goals really are!
Realistic – Can you achieve your desired goals?
Expansive – Delve deeper into your goals from previous years!
Attainable – Can you achieve your goals?
Timely – How long will it take to achieve your personal financial goals?
Write Down your GREAT Goals!
- Start by writing down your goals on a piece of paper or print them out and put them somewhere you’ll see often so you can review them on an on going basis. You can even do this on your phone (more on that below).
- Set reminders/alerts on your mobile device to keep tabs on tracking your goals.
Create a Plan!
The way I actually execute my goals is by using an app on my mobile phone. I recommend using the Productive Habits & Daily Goals Tracker. This application has been a game changer for my wife and I to keep track of the many tasks we have during the week and month.
As I mentioned above, you’ll want to dig deep and write down what your goals are daily. I know this may take time, but it will be worth it in the end to get everything organized and it will keep you on track and your mind fresh.

Have any Financial Goals?
My personal favorite application on my mobile phone is the Spending Tracker Application, which I prefer due the simplicity of keeping track of your spending, Using this application helps make recording my finances smoothly – who doesn’t have their phone on them 24/7? Another application that may serve you well is Mint:Personal Finance, Budget, Bills and Money. This application allows you to tie in your bank accounts, credit cards, bills and investments into one area on your mobile phone.
How Do I Use These Apps Together?
I use the productive habits and daily goals tracker to remind me about my daily goals. My day is usually hectic with conference calls, meetings, and research. It’s important to me that my days are planned ahead of time so I can use my time wisely. My days sometimes get so busy that without keeping an orderly habit tracker, I would forget to do important tasks. I also record my spending, which doesn’t occur that frequently, but I try to record as I remember and at the end of each day.
Here’s an example of my day:
- Wake Up
- Work out
- Get ready
- Eat breakfast while reading financial news that occurred overnight
- Remember packed lunch for work
- Review Today’s Schedule.
- Commute to work
- Check bank statements
- Call my wife to confirm what we are doing for dinner
- Commute home
- Feed the dog
- Write a blog post
- Answer any emails, conduct financial research
- Work out
- Eat Dinner
I want to reiterate that it is absolutely necessary for me to have structure in my day to properly manage my daily lifestyle.
When Should I Add New Goals?
When you think you are meeting all of your current goals, why not add new ones? If you want to push yourself to new heights and you think you can handle more on your plate, why not get start your 2018 goals in 2017? I hear a lot of people say, “I’ll get to that at a later time”. Why not NOW? Ask yourself, why procrastinate if you currently have the ability to take care of it? One of my favorite lines my father-in-law said to me when I first met him was, “Do it Now”. It’s stuck with me and I made it part of my personal mantra.
Celebrate When You Reach a Goal!
Don’t hesitate to celebrate when you reach your accomplishments! Having friends of family members aware of your goals may help you achieve them quicker and give you some extra motivation. I can’t tell you how many times I need a push from my wife or family member to get me motivated. It happens to the best of us – we tend to get lazy or complacent with the way things are – and nothing is better than our closest family and friends looking over our shoulder and cheering us on!
Remember: You can do great things if you set GREAT goals!
