My husband once said I’m the best consumer EVER. I would see commercials and ads on websites that advertised products that did “amazing” things and I bought into everything I heard. I was very gullible when we met – I’d believe everything people would say and every price tag I saw. When we got married, bought our first home, and started getting bills, we knew we had to watch our spending. I quickly learned that my husband was right – I was a very impressionable consumer and I had to be careful. I’ve employed these strategies while doing one of my favorite hobbies – shopping – and saved a ton of money!
4 Steps to Save Money When Shopping Online
1. Never Pay Full Price for ANYTHING
If you shop online on certain sites often, be sure to sign up to be on their email list. This will serve as your notification of a sale or give you a promo code to save on shipping or get a discount. Sometimes, the codes can be used not only online but also in stores! There’s nothing worse than buying something and getting an email telling you it’s on sale the next week – or worse – the next day! Trust me, I know.
2. Collect Those Coupons!
Be sure to pay attention to the website banner, the area at the top of the site, when you are purchasing from a website. Certain sites list coupon codes in this region that can be used on your purchase.
Also, visit RetailMeNot, a website that allows you to enter the name of the site you are about to make a purchase on and provides a list of coupon codes you can use, lists sales that are currently going on, and deals that have expired. You can even sign up to be on RetailMeNot’s email list and they’ll notify you when there are deals on hundreds of stores a week. Another great feature is that the site tells you if the code listed works or not, how many times the code’s been used, and when it expires.
3. Don’t Trust a Sale
Just because a store is having a sale doesn’t mean it’s not cheaper anywhere else. Use a search engine like Google to look for the product on other sites and compare prices. I’ve seen a product on a flash sale membership site listed for what I thought was the cheapest price until I Googled it and found that it was much cheaper elsewhere. This step is something that takes a second and saves you a lot of money.
4. Sign Up for Rewards
Ebates is an excellent website to use when purchasing anything online. Signing up is super simple and is FREE. All you have to do is visit Ebates while signed in and input the site you want to visit into their search bar. Then, you can view how much of a cash back percentage your purchase will earn and be redirected to the website where you can complete your transaction. Ebates automatically calculates your cash back amount and applies it to your account. When you get to a certain total, they will send you a check! It’s important to note that some sites don’t offer deals certain days and percentages of cash back changes as well. You’ll be notified of the changes and best websites to shop on daily through the Ebates email list. If you go to your account, sometimes there are special cash back perks that are made specifically for you. You can also refer a friend to Ebates, and when they sign up you get $25 and they get $10! Sign up here to get started.
You can also sign up for certain sites’ rewards programs that work both in stores and online. Program perks vary, but most programs are free of charge. Be sure to check the credentials before signing up.
